KYOTO INTERNATIONAL FILM AND ART FESTIVAL

Founded in 1958 by the “Committee to Honor Shozo Makino”, for the purpose of awarding filmmakers who contributed to the development of Japanese cinema. Shozo was a Kyoto born filmmaker often regarded as the father of Japanese cinema.
The award had been given at the Kyoto Citizen’s Film Festival and Kyoto Film Festival then at Kyoto International Film and Art Festival.

Toshiro Mifune is one of the leading Japanese movie stars representing the best of Japan’s post-war movies. To this day, he is admired throughout the world. The fierce action scenes rendered through his wild, dynamic demeanor and tall frame have had a revolutionary impact on cinematic expression and acting worldwide.
The Toshiro Mifune award has been newly established for the Kyoto International Film and Art Festival, with a selection committee that is made up of leading figures in the Japanese movie scene. The award is given to actors who are most likely to make an international impact on the film industry.

A diverse range of films unbounded by genre, including films to be released after KIFF 2019 and foreign films unreleased in Japan, will be introduced with special guests.
One of the attractions in this year’s program, and a befitting one for the concept of“ Film, Art and All the Other Things,” is the Japan premiere of “Kusama: Infinity,” a documentary about Yayoi Kusama, who is one of the world’s most famous artists.

This year marks the 90th year since the father of Japanese cinema Shozo Makino passed away. As such we are screening his work, which can be argued to be the root of Japanese cinema.The screening will be in the form of Katsuben (live narration), narrated by the oldest active performer in the industry, Yoichi Inoue.
We will pay respect to Shozo Makino through a Satsujin theatrical combat supervised by director Sadao Nakajima, and live demonstration of a Chambara sword fight to celebrate Makino’s success.

This is KIFF’s staple category, where a unique cinematic experience of“ discovering the new through the old” is offered to old and young audiences in the birthplace of Japanese cinema, Kyoto.
The program will be held at a venue only Kyoto can provide: the historic building of Oe Nogakudo, which turns 111 years old this year. The screening will be accompanied by silent film narration （Katsuben）, musical instrument performance, and commentary.
The event includes a special screening of films for which Mr. Shozo Makino acted as a director or an executive producer （also introduced in the Special Program section）, as well as Harold Lloyd and Laurel and Hardy comedies from the golden age of silent movies.

Kinji Fukasaku has produced numerous masterpieces over his career.
Last year, we introduced his classics in the genres of violence and action, which are his fortes.
This year we will focus more on his work dealing with “women”

Profile
Born July 3, 1930 in Midoriokamura, Ibaraki Prefecture.
Attended Ibaraki University Junior High School, Ibaraki Prefectural Mito First High School, and then enrolled at the Nihon University College of Art.
After graduating, Fukasaku joined the Toei Company in 1953.
He made his directorial debut in 1961 with Wandering Detective: Tragedy in Red Valley, the first film to star Sonny Chiba.
Released in 1973, his hit film Battles Without Honor and Humanity, broke Japanese film history records. Known for numerous major hit films, including Shogun’s Samurai (1978), Virus (1980), Makai Tensho (1981), Fall Guy (1982), Legend of the Eight Samurai (1983), Crest of Betrayal (1994), and Battle Royale (2000).
Fukasaku was awarded with a Purple Ribbon Medal of Honor in 1997.
His work in 2002 directing a CG movie for Clocktower 3 (a Playstation 2 game by Capcom) would mark his final film.
On September 25, 2002, it was announced that Fukasaku suffered from prostate cancer, which had metastasized in the spine. The same day, production of Battle Royale II: Requiem (2003) was announced. Filming began December 16, with Fukasaku's son Kenta filling in as the director (he also produced the film).
Though he planned to recover from his battle with cancer, Fukasaku passed away at the age of 72. While he's mainly known for his action and yakuza films, his work spans a wide range of genres, including period dramas such as Shogun's Samurai (1978) and Makai Tensho (1981),artistic films such as House on Fire (1986) and Omocha (1999),science fiction films such as The Green Slime (1968), Message from Space (1978), Virus (1980), and horror films such as Crest of Betrayal (1994).

Kyo Machinaka Film Festival

Gion Tenmaku Film Festival

Every year on July 15th, on the yoi-yoi-yama night of the Gion Festival, Shijo-Dori becomes a pedestrian zone and an outdoor cinema is set up.Now in its 11th year, this is fast becoming a new feature of Gion summers.
There are also plenty of movies to be screened with precious images and videos of Kyoto. This year, films by EUROPE-KIKAKU are the recommended works by Gion Tenmaku Festival and will be screened at the outdoor cinema.

Movies

Japanese anime has been enjoyed as a form of cinematic art through its 100-year history, but it has also contributed to community revitalization, as well as global exchange between people across the world. The screening will include": Children of the Sea", this year’s early summer hit feature animation from 3DCG; "Hakata Mentai! Pirikarako-chan", an animation starring mascot characters to promote community revitalization; and 4 films from the "Anime Tamago 2018" a training project for young animators. Moreover, in addition to last year’s "G9＋1" and "Animation Palette", we will also be screening a film from "Bomfor 64", a short anime school unit made up of Bakuhatsuro Ikeda, Hiroyuki Morita, and Mami Mayama.

Anime Tamago 2018

"Anime Tamago" is the nickname for the project commissioned by the Agency of Cultural Affairs, "Project to Nurture Young Animators and Other Talent", which started in 2010 to nurture animators and other artists who carry the future of the industry, through OJT (On-the-Job Training), for the purpose of the promot ion and development of Japanese animation. It is a project that nurtures young artists such as new animators, through OJT and Off-JT (Off-the-Job-Training), as they make original short animat ions. Following on from last year, we will screen four films in the Anime category.
